MIT Portugal Program Releases Candidacy Information for Academic Year 2008-2009
The MIT Portugal Program announces its call for applications for the 2008-09 academic year. Each program is offered in association by a consortium of Portuguese universities, with the participation of MIT faculty. Applications will be open in four Engineering Systems fields: EDAM-Engineering Design and Advanced Manufacturing, Transportation Systems, Sustainable Energy Systems and Bio-Engineering Systems. Formal candidacy materials and the online application form will be available in January 2008. All submissions of candidacy will be through the MIT Portugal Program website.

* Fluency in English: all MIT Portugal programs are conducted in English
* Submission of results from the GRE General Exam will constitute a condition of preference in the evaluation process

Statement of Interest
Candidates will be asked to give their reasons to do graduate work in the relevant MIT Portugal Program field. Candidates should include their particular interests, be they experimental, theoretical, or issue-oriented, and show how their background and the MIT Portugal Program degree of your choice support these interests. The statement should act as a proposal for graduate studies in the more specific context of candidates' professional objectives. Candidates should set forth the issues and problems they wish to address, making reference to specific research topics indicated for the chosen degree program. Candidates should explain their longer-term professional goals. The Statement must be in English and should be between 400-600 words.
Scholarships
* Scholarships will be available in each of the four program areas for PhD candidates, and for post-doctoral candidates in EDAM, Sustainable Energy Systems, and Transportation Systems.
* The number of available scholarships in each area will be defined in January 2008. At the discretion of the Program directors a significant number of scholarship holders may have the opportunity to conduct some of their doctoral research at MIT.
* Applications for scholarships will be online through the website of the Portuguese Science Foundation (FCT). Full information on application eligibility requirements and application procedures will be available in January 2008 on the MIT-Portugal Program website.

Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test
* Submission of scores for the GRE General Test will constitute a condition of preference in the admissions process
* The GRE General Test measures verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking, and analytical writing skills that have been acquired over a long period of time and that are not related to any specific field of study.
* Taking the GRE General Test lasts approximately three hours, during which time candidates complete tasks in analytical and argumentative writing, and multiple-choice questions in verbal and quantitative reasoning.
* The test site for the GRE General Test in Portugal is Lisbon. It is also offered throughout the world, on a year-round basis.
* Candidates intending to submit the GRE General Test results as part of their application to MIT-Portugal Program degrees should complete the test by 10 March 2008.
